Travis walked along the storefronts in the World Trade Center Mall, whistling a joyful tune. He came to a stop in front of the coffee stand.

“Good morning, Martha,” Travis greeted the woman behind the counter. His presence at the coffee stand every morning had become routine, right down to the minute.

“You’re late,” Martha said, looking down at her watch, taking note of the time.

Travis hadn’t had time to put his watch on that morning. In his haste to get out the door, he shoved his watch into his pocket and flew out of his apartment building. Travis stood at the coffee kiosk, having no idea what time it was. “What time is it, anyway?” he asked, reaching into his pocket to retrieve his watch.

As he wiggled the watch out of his pocket, he heard a clink on the floor. Searching the floor to see what had fallen from his pocket, he spotted the shiny flattened penny from the observation deck. He quickly bent down to retrieve it. He held up the shiny penny that read WORLD TRADE CENTER, 2001 and showed it to Martha.

“It’s my good luck charm. I keep it in my pocket everyday,” he said.

Martha smiled, concentrating on pouring his usual dark roast coffee into a medium-sized coffee cup, securing it with a white lid. “It’s almost 8:45, dear. You’d better run.” Martha handed him his coffee.

Travis gave her two dollar bills from his pocket. She had already collected his change from the drawer and simultaneously handed him twenty-one cents back.

“Thanks, Martha, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He shoved the change into his right pocket.

“Okay, dear, see you tomorrow,” she replied as Travis turned to continue on toward the glass turnstile doors leading into the North Tower lobby.

On the other side of the turnstile, Travis noticed Carl, an attorney from his office, heading toward him in his motorized wheelchair. Carl was a heavyset man in his early sixties, with reddish brown hair and copper freckles dotting his face. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury from a skiing accident in his twenties. Though he survived the incident, he never did regain the use of his legs. Carl worked with Travis in the disability law department and had the reputation of being a ferocious and unmatchable attorney.

Carl came closer, maneuvering his wheelchair against the traffic heading toward the elevators. Travis could see he was flustered, his copper freckles almost disappearing against the backdrop of his flushed face.

“Hey, Carl, you’re going in the wrong direction. Is everything okay?” Travis asked with concern.

“I don’t know where my head is at today,” he replied. “I put my briefcase down when I got my coffee, and like a dunce, I must have left it there. My ID badge, wallet, and everything is in there.” Panic started to rise in his voice.

“No worries. I just came from there; I’ll just run back and grab it,” Travis quickly reassured him. “Wait here. We’ll be on the next elevator up, with your briefcase.”

Travis’s whole world had consisted of taking care of Eli, thus Carl represented the hope Travis had for him.
